Solar letters cause the L in the al- definite article to be converted into the solar letter that follows it. Solar letters are in the category of T/D, S/Z, R and N.

Lunar letters / الحروف القمرية / qamari

Lunar letters keep the "L" in the definite article al-. Remember the difference as Lunar starts with an L, while solar does not. Also shamsi, meaning solar starts with a solar letters, and qamari meaning lunar, starts with a lunar letter. The lunar letter set includes K/Q/H, long vowels, B and 3/3'. Also, the lunar letters are not the solar letters, and each account for half of the 28 letters of the alphabet.
